MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY AND ORAL MICROBIOLOGY

The subject of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology is the science and art of medical and dental sciences that deals with the laboratory and advanced molecular/cellular examinations of samples of body tissue (biopsies or fluids) to arrive at a more specific diagnosis of the diseases and abnormalities afflicting the oral cavity, teeth, tongue, jaws, salivary glands, neck, and maxillofacial region in correlation with the clinical, haematological, and imaging features. The subject also deals with oral microbiology, forensic science, and research. Over the years this dept. has been referred to as Dept. of Oral Pathology / Dept. of Oral Pathology and Microbiology / Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (OMFP).

The dept. is one of the nine dental departments of MES Dental College and Hospital established in 2007, situated on the second floor, and is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). The dept. has a 3000sqft Jacob Zacharia Memorial Lab with dual LCD projectors, audio-system, seating capacity for 120 students/delegates with granite tables having adequate power source for individual laptops/microscopes, and internet facility for online/hybrid digital classes.

The dept. has a 2000sqft lab for histopathology, cytopathology, haematology, biochemistry, immunofluorescent and research microscope with camera-image analysis software, and forensic odontology. The dept. has a 500sqft museum for visualizing and understanding comparative anatomy, histology, pathology, developmental anomalies, and forensic odontology. Faculties from this dept. are recognized by KUHS as PhD guides and hence the dept. plays an enormous role in postgraduate and doctoral researches, ethics, and scientific publications.

Subjects for undergraduate studies under the Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology include
  • I year BDS – Dental Anatomy, Oral Embryology, Oral Histology, and Oral Physiology.
  • II year BDS – Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology.
  • III year BDS – Oral Pathology, Oral Microbiology, Forensic Odontology, and Laboratory
