The Department of Public Health Dentistry at MES Dental College and Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MES Medical College and Hospital, organized an awareness session focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use during pregnancy and its impact on maternal and child health. The session took place on 31st MAY 2024 at the Obstetrics and Gynecology department’s premises. Our speaker, Dr. Anjana Hari from the Department of Public Health Dentistry delivered information on the dangers of tobacco use during pregnancy.
More than 40 antenatal mothers participated in the awareness session. Topics included the various harmful chemicals present in tobacco smoke, the increased risks of complications such as preterm birth and low birth weight, and the importance of quitting smoking for the health of both mother and child. The session included interactive discussions where attendees could share their experiences, ask questions, and seek clarification regarding tobacco use and its consequences during pregnancy. This facilitated a participatory learning environment and encouraged engagement from the audience. Informational pamphlet highlighting the risks of tobacco use was distributed among the attendees. These materials provided comprehensive information on the health hazards associated with smoking and offered resources for smoking cessation support. The event facilitated networking opportunities between dental and obstetric healthcare professionals, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing tobacco-related health issues during pregnancy. The awareness session achieved its objectives by increasing awareness among expecting mothers and healthcare professionals about the adverse effects of tobacco use during pregnancy. Attendees gained valuable knowledge about the risks associated with maternal smoking and the importance of seeking support for tobacco cessation.
